About John

Our CEO since 2009, John has led the successful merger of the lending and leasing elements of our Commercial Finance unit, established new operating and management models, and refined our business strategy to drive GE Capital’s growth in the post-financial-crisis market. His focus for GE Capital UK is on providing specialist lending, leasing and fleet services to SMEs and larger corporations.

John joined GE Capital in mid 2005 as Commercial Director of our Commercial Finance Business Finance unit and was promoted to CEO of the unit later that same year. Over the next three years, he refined our Commercial Finance group’s strategy and operating model - driving strong, safe growth and expanding its market position. In 2008, via rigorous risk and financial management, John successfully led the business through the global financial crisis.

Prior to GE, John held a number of leadership positions with Lloyds TSB. After joining the TSB Group’s specialist commercial lending business in 1988, John progressed through various risk and commercial roles until being promoted to Business Development Director and joining the board in 1996. In this role, John expanded the product and market positions of the business, overseeing the introduction of asset-based lending and leading the build of risk management and commercial propositions.

Subsequent to the group’s merger with Lloyds Bank, John was promoted to Marketing Director of the combined business. In the same year, he also led the merger of TSB Commercial Finance with Alex Lawrie Factors and the refinement of its operating strategy - adding Internet propositions and new e-business products - whilst concurrently serving on the risk management committee. In 2002, John moved into the role of Sales Director, and 2003 saw him expanding the business remit to include asset finance as it absorbed the former Black Horse business.

Educated in South Wales, John subsequently moved to London, where he trained in an accountancy practice and qualified as a Chartered Certified Accountant in 1989.

John lives in Hampton, South West London with his wife and two children. He is Chairman of Harlequin Amateurs RFC - still playing for their veterans’ team - and also chairs the RGA, a non-profit organisation providing gymnastics facilities to over 1,600 children in the Richmond borough.
